sdm replacement??

I have search the forum and I can't really find a consistent answer... is it necessary to replace the sdm after airbag deployment??

If it is, can one be used from a salvage yard out of a car that has not had the airbags blown?

What's the "sdm"? IIRC, no components of the air bag system have to replaced/reset after an accident as long as they are not damaged and in working order.

And yeah, what is this SDM you speak of??

And common sense tells us, yeah IF the airbags deployed, wouldn't the airbag sensor be crushed/dammaged? Nothing would need to be replaced if it has not been dammaged.

I think there are two sensors that are used to deploy the air bags. One in the front bumper area (impact sensor) and another under the dash.

SDM is the "black box":
Quote:
Air bag deployment 'black box' SDM / EDR crash data recovery for 1994 and newer GM and Saturn vehicles using the Vetronix crash data retrieval tool.
........................

GM air bag SDM / event data recorder module, Vetronix CDR tool, Hewlett Packard laptop displaying actual air bag crash data.
......
Late '90's GM Delphi air bag event data recorder 'black box' SDM module

......
Logan Diagnostic offers air bag deployment crash data retrieval via the air bag SDM module for General Motors (GM) and Saturn vehicles. This can only be done using the Vetronix crash data retrieval tool (CDR) and a PC. We can offer a report on the stored crash data in the air bag SDM module recorder (aka the 'black box', EDR or event data recorder). The air bag SDM recorder can offer extremely important vehicle data in the final 5 seconds leading up to an accident event.

..................

AIR BAG SDM / BLACK BOX / EDR / CRASH DATA AVAILABLE (depending on year and model)

Vehicle speed (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Engine speed (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Brake status (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Throttle position (in five one-second intervals preceding impact)
Driver's seat belt state (On/Off)
Passenger's airbag enabled or disabled state (On/Off)
Airbag Warning Lamp status (On/Off)
Time from vehicle impact to airbag deployment
Maximum Delta-V ( DV ) for near-deployment event
Delta-V ( DV ) vs. time for frontal airbag deployment event
Time from vehicle impact to time of maximum Delta-V ( DV )
Time between near-deploy and deploy event (if within 5 seconds)

Additional crash data available 2006 and newer GM vehicles:

Low tire pressure warning system status
Traction control status
Anti lock brake status
Transmission range
Service engine lamp status
Vehicle door 2/4 status open/closed
Outside air temperature in degrees F
Passenger seat belt switch
Yaw rate
Lateral acceleration
Steering wheel angle
PDOF / Principal direction of force degrees
And more...
...............

How does it work? The air bag SDM module (GM) is removed from the wrecked vehicle and shipped to Logan Diagnostic. We will then power up the air bag SDM module and download the recorded crash data report from the module using the Vetronix CDR. Our report services include:

High quality printed and bound report of the stored air bag crash data.
CD-ROM of the stored air bag crash data in PDF format.
Return overnight shipping of the airbag deployment crash data report, CD-ROM, and the original SDM airbag module.
The PDF crash data can also be sent by email the same day.
Our service is only available for 1994 and newer GM and Saturn vehicles.
Please feel free to contact us if you require more air bag information or if you need the crash data downloaded from a GM air bag SDM /EDR.

They have that box but it just tells what sensor went off and how long it took to deploy the air bags. I deleted mine along with the airbags and all the sensors.

You will need a new stering wheel or just cut the guys of the bag out of it but be careful. Removing the passenger one was tricky but it can be done. The sensors are easy and the "black box" was just spot welded on. I removed all the reachable wires and will remove the rest at a later date.
