replacing shifter and the wiring is crap

Bought a used 97ss.

The previous owner, who was a genius, installed a hurst shifter as a complete hack job. To pass a Maryland safety inspection I have to swap in a stock shifter.

The wiring that opens the circuit to the starter when not in park was all hacked up. I rewired it to what looked like stock and put in a stock shifter. (Huge pain in the butt)

When I turn the keo on, engine off, it makes a loud clicking sound in the engine bay, and the low traction light blinks on and off. WTF

Does anybody know what causes that? I am seriously ready to burn the car.

Change:

With key on engine off, the ASR light, brake warning light, and low oil light blink on and off, with a clicking sound in the engine bay.

The Hurst shifter was an OEM/SLP option in 97! So you did not have to change it. It's completely legal!!!!!!! And this is one of the easiest swaps you can do to your car, so quit griping.
As for the wiring, I feel your pain. I hate it when people do this.

P.S. Nice choice, picts??

Actually, it wasn't stock, it was a hack job install. The guy welded his own bracket on to the metal frame for the stock shifter, and cut out the entire center area of the console, with the gear position indicator cut out with a dremel or something. He also changed the shifter cable and now I have to adjust it by alot.

Oh boy, he also changed the transmission shift cable. The new one is not adjustable enough to use with the stock shifter. WTF

why would they require a stock shifter?!?!? As long as the one that was in there was installed properly and the P/R/N lockouts switches worked properly.

Its not so much the stock shifter, but the fact that he had to cut out the gear selector indicator. That is required in MD.

I'm not sure how much you are willing to spend to pass MD regs, but here is a possible solution. It is digital and a "sending unit" attaches to the shifter. No position cable.
