Porting the MAF

Re: Porting the MAF
Actually if you could be 100% sure it would lean it out, it would be a good mod. The stock LT1 programming for WOT (power enrichment mode) is way too rich for peak power and torque. It will generally target about 11.7:1, compared to the 12.8-13.2:1 generally required.
But, that's not the way to "tune" your engine. Go to one of the mailorder tuners, and they can adjust the PE mode target A/F ratios and net you 15HP free... no other changes. Then when you are ready for more upgrades, they will be working with an MAF sensor with a "known" calibration curve. Tuners hate molested MAF sensors, since the calibration curve becomes unpredictable.
Given the mods you list, the stock MAF shouldn't be limiting air flow.

Re: Porting the MAF
well i do have a 52mm BBK on the way if that matters? And i'm doing a 290 (around) head and hotcam package in the winter...

Re: Porting the MAF
Hrm, at what point should one start looking for a better flowing maf? After I get my engine back together I'm expecting to make around 400-420hp. That's with ported heads, cam, ported intake, 58mm throttle body, 3" CAI, 3" true dual exhaust /w hooker LTs, 36# injectors.
My existing maf may not be working right. It's pretty dirty, so I'm going to spray some contact cleaner on it and see if that helps. Unfortunately I dropped a cresent wrench right onto the the resisters. They all seem to be intact, but I'm not going to hold my breath while I test it out. Someone recommended the same MAF that the LT4 vets use, because they don't have that divider. Would that be a wise upgrade?

Re: Porting the MAF
as far as i know the LT4s use the same maf
and a 3" cai would be a bit restrictive. but realize that the diameter of the stock maf is 3" also...minus the cross sectional area lost to the divider.
i would stick with the stock, UNPORTED maf.
maybe try the ZO6 maf after you have the car tuned, see if you pick up any power...would be an interesting test

Re: Porting the MAF
A 3" air intake is restrictive? I don't see how I could make it any bigger. The intake elbow is 3", the maf is 3". Would there be any advantage to making the rest of if bigger? I think if anything you'd just end up losing throttle response.

Re: Porting the MAF
sorry bout that...
but we basically answered your question dont port the maf...simple as that.
and i do beleive the intake elbow is about 3.5"...but anyway

Re: Porting the MAF
I've asked before, and I'd really like some input (especially from the likes of Injuneer)...
How much power is the stock 4th gen MAF good for? What HP level does it become an airflow restriction?

Re: Porting the MAF
I dont' know what the upper limit is. I don't use one.
The calibration limit is 471gps..... that's a huge HP level.... about twice stock HP levels.
There's also the Z06 MAF, but it needs a new calibration curve in the PCM.

Re: Porting the MAF
Thanks for the info!
I think that too many people with 4th gens are too eager to fool around with the MAF, when it really isn't necessary. I'm running the stock, unported, screened MAF without any problems.
