Passenger Airbag Removal?

Passenger Airbag Removal?
I want to be able to drive my car with my 7 year old sitting in the front and not have to worry about the airbag chopping her head off in the event of accident.
How do I get the thing out?

Re: Passenger Airbag Removal?
The whole front of the dash has to be unbolted and pulled forward to remove it. It's really not that hard, but there are 2 things you need to be aware of. The Vehicle Anti Theft Module is mounted to the air bag bracket, it will have to be removed from the bracket and left intact and plugged in for the car to start. Also there is a grey relay attatched to the bracket that must also stay intact in the wiring harness or the car will not start. Don't cut the wires to these items. If you need to you can unplug them and then remove them from the bracket oncit is out of the car, just reinstall them and plug them back in. All connections that have to do with the SIR system will be yellow. There is also a brown wire you will need to cut to deactivate the airbag light in the guage cluster. I believe there is more info on which wire to cut on shoebox's website.

Thanks for the quick response!
Edit: I just spent some time on his site - quite a lot of info there!
I couldn't find anything about removing the passenger side airbag though.

My suggestion is to remove the front seats and sit in the back to drive. That way you're still next to each other. Lots of legroom. Little trickier when you have a manual though.
More room for fooling around back there too.

Re: Passenger Airbag Removal?
Why remove the airbag? Just unplug it and stick a resistor in its place to fool the system into thinking it is still there. You could even wire a switch in there to bypass it with a resistor.

Re: Passenger Airbag Removal?
Thats a good idea, as long as you're not wanting to reduce wieght or anything that would be the easiest way to do it and be able to make it operational again later.

Re: Passenger Airbag Removal?
This is what you want to read. There is a permit process for this. Look up airbags.

Re: Passenger Airbag Removal?
You'll need to do a little research and find out what value resistor to use in conjunction with the switch to disable it. If you unplug it without substituting a resistor it will make the "airbag" light come on.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Passenger Airbag Removal?
i took my passenger side air bag out today and i just had the battery disconnected and pulled the fuse just to be sure...i kinda felt like i was defusing a bomb or something but it didnt blow up in my face haha.... as long as you reach under (and stay clear of the airbag) and disconnect the yellow plug i wouldnt think it would go off...good luck
breakmyfootoff...your reply makes sense...i took the air bag out and my car wouldnt start so i just pluged it in again for now, but now i realize those plugs are not for the airbag...thanks
