overheating

i have an 89 iroc 350 5.7 that is overheating. radiator, waterpump, thermostat all seem fine. fans appear to be working normally. car will run at like 230-235 as long as i baby it. what is a normal running temp? also, if i take the radiator cap off and run it, it will spit and burp fluid out as if there is an air pocket. however i let it run for almost an hour and could not get this to stop........if there is an air pocket how would i go about getting it out, and does anyone have any other suggestions?

thanx

Re: overheating

I had a similar problem with my '85 Trans Am. The problem was a missing air dam! Check your air dam, it is crucial to diverting air up through the radiator.

Re: overheating

Get in front of the car and look under it. Just under the radiator you should see a black rubberized vane sticking down which is directly in the path of the air going under the bumper. It's job is to divert air upwards and through the radiator. The GM F-bodies are "bottom breathers". This air dam is crucial to cooling, since it provides airflow for the radiator. At low speeds the fans do the job, but at higher speeds, the fans cut out, and the air dam does its thing.

Re: overheating

also i would suggest looking into a low temp fan switch from JET. my 89 RS did the same thing, and after replacing everything i realized the stock fan switch came on at about 220*. the aftermarket one put it on at 195*, and solved the problem. the fan switch is located underneath the passenger side head, and is accessible from u nder the car
