Mystery problem solved: VATS causing a no-start condition.
I have been having this problem with my '97 Z28 for a year and a half. You would be driving along, cruise control set and the ignition would die, come alive, die, come alive and so on, very intermittently. Couldn't pinpoint the cause until the car left me stranded in a parking lot, almost. Wouldn't even crank so I figured maybe the starter was going bad. We push started it and it just stumbled and backfired, no start. Messed around with the key for 15 minutes and finally got it to start. So the research began...I read a lot of posts where people had a bad key, dirty key or ignition, etc. So I cleaned mine and also replaced the key with a brand new one. Still, the car would not crank, whatsoever. I went online again and found out people are bypassing their VATS, or vehicle anti theft system, or pass key II. It is a little resistor I bought from a reputable online dealer(google "bypass module" and you will find it). Took me 10 minutes to wire it in and the car has not caused me a single problem since. It fires up every single time, and the intermittent ignition is all overwith, finally. Only downside is now the anti theft is disabled, but my car isn't worth more than $5k anyways so who cares.

The resistor is wired in at the bottom of the steering column. All you have to do is take off the access panel and look for the correct wire. Cut it, install resistor, problem solved. It literally takes 10 minutes and no skill. The resistor I purchased came with instructions and pictures.

The PASS-Key bypass info/diagram has been on Shoebox's site for about 15 years.....
