Re: Ls1 oil change?
I did a search on here and came to the conclusion that Mobil 1 full synthentic was the best for the price. I get it through work and pay $6 a quart. I just get the AC Delco from our parts department and it seems the filter aren't that different or it comes down to opinion.

Just reading threads and seeing what our Camaro owners used. I was told 5w 30 for my application. Your location can affect it.

Re: Ls1 oil change?
Forget what the masses say. The performance of engine oil can be MEASURED and it is relatively inexpensive to do so.
Used Oil Analysis only cost $20 or so and you can find out how the oil you pick worked in your car under the conditions you drive it.
When people preach M1 they are usually basing that on the oil fill cap that a marketing agreement got put on the Vette.
There is a forum online where people discuss automotive lubrication in terms other than the marketing driven discussion you will get here.

They have a UOA section where people share the results of their vehicle's UOAs I would suggest doing research there.

Re: Ls1 oil change?
Use the link I offered and see what actual measured results there are for LS motors. It is important to look at similar applications because an oil can be high quality but just not do well in a particular engine. Formulas change periodically too.
The "M1 is best for GM V8s" started with them putting it in the LT1 Vette, BUT those who actually cared about measuring how it performed found consistently high iron content in drained oil.
I haven't spent a lot of time looking at LS1 UOAs so I am not saying M1 can't be good. I am suggesting people actually learn that we do have a tool to MEASURE what works rather than blindly following marketing.

Re: Ls1 oil change?
Car has never seen anything besides Royal Purple and runs lika champ. expensive though. i only flush it everyother time. first 3-5k i just change filter and top it off. then next time i drain it all and start over. K&N oil filters available at autoparts stores, work fine

Re: Ls1 oil change?
I was ready to go buy some Royal Purple and was shocked to see all the bad things on here. A search will result a number of problems from it. I had no idea and never heard anything but what I saw here.

Re: Ls1 oil change?
im sure theres a 'best' oil out there. however, mobil 1 is affordable, and more than adequate. i use that and a bosch filter. currently at 8 months and 2700 miles on it (changed it soon after i got the car), and oil still looks good, if that means anything.

Re: Ls1 oil change?
Almost any oil that meets the API standards for these cars is "good enough"- all the synthetics are really buying is extended change intervals- and they still can become diluted and pick up impurities, even if they aren't breaking down. Personally, I would rather change the oil more frequently, and use a good synthetic blend, rather than spend so much a quart, and still have to dump the $$ down the drain.

Re: Ls1 oil change?
I don't change the oil much because the car sits over the winter and isn't driven more than 5ooo miles a year. I understand the synthentic oil won't break down over time like standard.

Re: Ls1 oil change?
It is laughable that people use "this is what I use and never had a problem" as evidence. You know a lot of cars use bulk quicklube oil and the worst filter money can buy and never have a problem.
A better oil is not necessarily a matter of spending more either, you might find one that is cheaper that actually works better.

Re: Ls1 oil change?
Synthetics do break down the old running joke was "royal purple shears out of grade pouring from the bottle" meaning the long molecules that give it thick viscosity shear and the oil drastically thinned quickly.
Amsoil on the other hand oxidizes and gets thicker as it breaks down.
