losing weight...

I want to cut some weight from my fourth gen. How hard would it be to cut say 150 to 200 pounds?

Re: losing weight...

Are you wanting to take stuff out like carpet, spare, rear seats, and jack or replace things with lightweight material like brakes and front cross member.

Re: losing weight...

its more like how expensive and how crazy you want to go with it.
power window motors, new tubular control arms are good up to losing 20 lbs, cd player? radio? backseat, rear carpeting, spare tire and jack, washer fluid resovoir, smaller/lighter battery, lighter rims, carbon fiber parts replacement if applicable.

what i laugh at is people on the borderline of a good 1/4 mile time, do the weight reduction, then are told they need a roll bar/cage. add the weight back on.

Re: losing weight...

Basically what's going on is I am putting together a low 12 combo now and plan to supercharge it after next season. So after the blower i'll need a cage but not until then. I know I'll lose stuff like the backseat anyhow and I'm redoing the interior so there's no sense in recovering that and then taking it out. I am more in the market for cheap weight reduction and not blowing a whole lot of money. Brake upgrade will be a must before long as well as the carpet as I am doing the interior. I want to keep stuff like the power windows cause it's not just a strip car.

All I have done now is the jack and spare, tubular lca's, and a tubular tq arm. Those weren't ment to save weight, even if they do, I had other reasons for that stuff.

Re: losing weight...

So far my car is at 3220 with a full tank of gas.
I still have the stereo in it (soundstream angina amps and a stealthbox) and today I removed the front bumper support. I have KBDD subframes and a granatelli Gload brace on the car and a heavier BMR adjustable TA.
I removed the HVAC, airbags, horns, E brake, replaced the stock shifter with a Pro Stick, lightweight carpet, backseat and passenger seat, spare and jack, seatbelts and hardware (except for driver) and I will get to the rear bumper support sometime next week.
I forgot about the sunvisors, thanks for reminding me Fred.
I plan on a 3000 lb raceweight without me in it. I think I can get there with a cage installed but the stereo will have to go eventually and some lighter brakes and a Kmember, also some fiberglass body stuff.
It really depends on what you can live without.

Re: losing weight...

Wow! There's a lot in that link! I guess I've got to do some compromising and figure what I can live with out. I am putting forged aluminum pistons and rods with a forged crank. How much more does that weigh than stock? It's basically done but I'd like to know anyway. Thaks for the ideas fellas.

Re: losing weight...

The problem with a lot of the high performance parts is that they add weight rather than reduce it. On my Formula, with lightweight drag wheels and tires, no A/C, no back seat, spare, lightweight racing seat, etc and a lot of common weight reduction items, my car still weighed 3,760# with me (185#) in it. Stuff like the roll bar (even though its lighter weight chrome moly) and heavy suspension components added a lot of weight back on.

After my last round of cuts - bumper pads, steering wheel/airbag, stereo, 50# 4" Mufflex catback, 1 horn, the visors, a lot of carpet backing, all heat shields, etc. - and some add-ons with the Gear Vendors O/D unit, and a beefy Spohn rear drag sway bar - the car is only down to 3,635# with me in it.

Lighter is not always better. A street driven car needs more strength than some of the tubular K-members can provide. Even on a track car, a buddy of mine broke a PA Racing K-member with a hard drop from a wheelstand. The welds were terrible.

You're talking about slamming the whole front end of the car down on the track and you claim the welds were terrible? That sounds a little hypocritical Fred lol
