Looking for tips to remove console in 93 6 speed

I am removing the console to repair/replace the armrest.

First I am seeking some tips for the process to remove the entire unit. I have the bolts and screws out and shift boot off. Not sure what else needs to come off or the trick to manipulating it over the handbrake lever and shifter.

Second, I would like to know how the console lid actually attaches to the console. I have a steel rod and some broken plastic on the console body, and just broken plastic on the lid.

Thanks in advance

To get over the parking brake, just pull the handle as vertical as possible, and it will slide over it.

Not sure on the console lid, I replaced mine with a 97+ console about 13 years ago.

Success!

I pushed the passenger seat fully forward, including the seat back, and picked up the rear of the console and carefully twisted the whole thing anti clockwise, while the rear was worked up higher.

You have to pop out the cigar lighter and remove the wiring connector, and then up and over the handbrake, then out through the passenger door behind the seat.

Oh, the small console light socket needed to be cut too.

Still wondering how the console lid is installed on the console. Surely not factory pressed? Hope not. Is there an aftermarket fix with a hinge that screws to either the lid or the console?????

Re: Looking for tips to remove console in 93 6 speed

I have some photos of the Firebird console lid attachment, may be the same as the Camaro. The lid has three vertical plastic tabs that have holes in them for the steel rod. The console base has two large cylindrical tabs with holes for the rod. The three vertical tabs fit over/between the two cylindrical tabs, and the rod slides into the aligned holes = the hinge. The three vertical tabs fit into the matching slots in the console base when the cover closes.

I have to upload the photos to my garage so that I can embed them in my next post.

Photos - See if this looks anything like the Camaro console.

More success!

The steel rod is pushed out of the holes in the console lid section, and by default, it easily clears through the holes in the console section.

I would think the rod is the primary assembly tool, just push it or work it through.

One end of the rod has a light thread for about 1/4 ". I imagine that is the first part to push through, and would seat into the LAST hole, that being the lid portion.

I will look at some methods , maybe fiberglass, to repair the hinge. I have taken a few pictures so , if successful with a repair, I will post up the entire process.

Thanks Fred, you must have posted as I was typing.

Yes, the console section looks almost identical for the Camaro. Quite a bit different on the lid, so here are some pics. Bear in mind there is some damaged and missing parts on my lid. Essentially the same system with the rod. Thanks very much for your quick response and pics Fred.
