Maybe it's borrowed technology from Honda or something?!? I'm pretty sure I've seen Honda gear shifters with D1 and D2 marked on them?

Actually GM does have a couple 5 speed autos (5L40E and 5L50E) used in newer Cadillacs. It's also sold for use in some non-GM cars.

I wish theyd get some LS1 crusiers up here, we have to put up with those damn crown vics, and soon the come magnums and 300's. I have never seen a 5 speed auto, but if they exist I take one after i blow my 4 speed. Who knows Maybe with camaro cruisers it would be fun to be pulled over once in a while......j/k

Man, Check my sig. I have heard *everything when it comes to Interceptors.

You know what the difference is for the most part? Heavy duty cooling, electrical, brakes and driveshaft. The LT1's and LS1's are identical to what you yourself can order as far as performance.

And I beg to differ about reduced maintenace on these cars. I have full records on mine and they were both maintained well. The problem is you just can't make up for endless hours of idling, jumping curbs, running thru the medians etc. That will take its' toll on ANY vehicle. For anyone that cares, here are the 0-100 specs for the 1996 models from an official test.

0–100 mph (sec.)
LT1 Caprice 21.47
Crown Vic 25.18
Camaro B4C 16.65

And max top speed?

Crown Vic - 135
Caprice - 135
Camaro - 164

1/4 mile times

Crown Vic - 16.89@83.8 mph
Caprice - 16.14@88 mph
Camaro - 14.98@96.6 mph

Keep in mind this is for the '96 model year. I have later years but I am just too lazy to look it up. Nothing magical here guys.

Oh, and BTW, read my sig again. Some people just don't get it.

I thought LT1s had a govererned top speed of 155 MPH and their 1/4-mile times were low-to-mid 14s at just under 100 MPH? Maybe that 1/4-mile pass was done with all of the equipment in the car, making it a little heavier.

Did the PD have the Camaro's governer removed for service?

Any LT1 ordered with Z rated tires will run out at 160 or so. No governor.

Here is my take on buying used cop cars

Re: How fast are Highway Patrol LS1's?

Even though I believe this post has to be BS, if it were true:

What does he patrol??? A Drag strip. More & more BS in these Posts.

Hm............. mabye you should do some research on subsidized vehicles in the state of Hawaii before you call BS on me my friend. The footmen in Hawaii drive the typical crown vics, but the motorized units are able to use their own vehicle for patrol duties. When you become a motorized unit, or "motorman" the city gives you an allowance for using your personal vehicle. The tourist's usually see blue and whites in waikiki because only blue and whites are used in Waikiki (for high visibility). Outside of Waikiki are many motorized vehicles. Most use camaro's, mustang's, g35's, and differant types of SUV'S. The issued crown vics have the typical blue light bar, the subsidized vehicles use a single blue dome light. Now, do some research, or get in touch with someone who lives in Hawaii first, then call BS.

I've seen the corvette highway patrol cars--- they seem to be for escorting. I only see them when President Bush is driving through town.

Edit: I've also see on a rare occasion an SS highway patrol car.

The cops around here all drive the crown vics, Impalas, or Monte Carlos, but the highway patrol gets the special LS1 packages.

LOL I'm sorry, forgive me, and I apologize. I wasn't aware that you knew about EVERY car that's on the highways today, be it a custom hybrid, or a special high-speed package. Tell me, friend, since you know every car in every state--- what's my vin number? What color interior? What color is my car? What are some of my "various other minor and free mods?" What speed have I topped my car out at?

How about my friends cars? Can you tell me about them? I've been wanting to know what secret mods my friends have been installing...

LOL I'm not saying the car has a factory installed 5 speed auto, as he bought it used as an ex-interceptor. We were all a tad confused. Believe it or not, I don't care. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I don't ponder it for days on end. he's not a good friend, but he IS a police officer, and I get to talk to him once in a while. Maybe this summer if I run across him again I'll take some pictures for you all.

I don't know every car on the roads today, far from it. But I do know your friend doesnt have a 5 speed auto in his.

How about my friends cars? Can you tell me about them? I've been wanting to know what secret mods my friends have been installing...
Again, I'm far from a know it all, but I do know your friends Camaro doesn't have a 5 speed auto in it.

like I said earlier, put your money where your mouth is. Prove to me that he has a 5 speed auto installed there and I will send you a $100 check. Forget the fact that the only GM 5 speeds JUST came out, forget the fact that they would probably require major mods to the floor panels just to fit it, and the seperate computer required to control it, and the custom work that would have had to be done to the console to make it read as you say and fit, and the shifter and all of the other million things that come along with it. Someone would have spent 3 times the value of the car to install it, it just doesn't make sense.

*edit*
not to mention you said the shifter read "1, 2, 3, D, D2, R, N, P" so somebody would have had to figure out this new tranny which isn't even widely available yet and make a brand new custom valve body for it
