Horn slip-ring replacement

I have had this apart before but it has been many years ago and I guess old age is creeping up on me, but...

I need to replace the horn slip ring in my 96 SS. I have the snap ring for the air bag trigger/sensor/whatever out but I can't get the sensor out. I don't want to pry on it. That doesn't seem like a great idea but it doesn't want to move. What am I forgetting? Thanks.

Re: Horn slip-ring replacement

That's the SIR coil, or "clock spring" that allows the wires to be routed through to the steering wheel, while still allowing the wheel to rotate. Did you unplug the SIR coil harness connector at the base of the steering column. That may be preventing the coil from moving.

Before doing anything lock the steering wheel straight ahead, remove the "AIR BAG" fuse and let it sit for 10 minutes.

I'll check that connection. I thought I had pulled the one on this car before without disconnecting anything at the base of the column. I disconnected the battery before I started working on the car. Does that work instead of pulling the "Air Bag" fuse?

Disconnecting the battery works.
