Heater problem.

97 Camaro Z28. Once the engine is up to temperature, my heater continues to blow only luke-warm air. Barely warm enough to keep the windshield defogged. I've flushed the heater core twice myself, and had it done once professionally, replacing all the old coolant. What else could be the causing this problem?

Re: Heater problem.

If you are positive that the heater core and the hoses are not clogged (both hoses warm near the water pump), other possibilities are stuck open thermostat or non functional blend door in the HVAC housing under the dash. The door is cable operated.

Re: Heater problem.

When the engine is fully warmed up, are both heater hoses hot? That would confirm flow to the heater.

Re: Heater problem.

I will double-check to make sure, but when I flushed the heater core out with a garden hose, there was absolutely no problem with flow...

I has not been made clear if you flushed it at the firewall or through the hoses.

Re: Heater problem.

Checked the hoses going into the heater core. Checked the cable controlling the flapper door; opened & closed the flapper door manually. Still pushing out luke-warm air. I'm running a 160* thermostat. Any chance this problem would be corrected by swapping out to a different one?

Re: Heater problem.

When you turn your Temp. **** from cold to warm to you hear the door open? In the Camaro's you can hear it if your quiet enough. Your door may not be opening allowing the hot fluid to run through.

Mine was doing the same thing, my door was jammed shut from old fluid. I used the garden hose and flushed my system. Still didn't fix it, so I used my fingers to dig out old fluid.

Might want to use a wire hanger.
Do you have a consistent flow of water when using a garden hose?

Re: Heater problem.

There is no "door" that allows "hot fluid" to run through the heater core. The system design provides constant flow of coolant through the heater core at all times. The "door" is a flapper door, operated by a cable that connects it to the temperature ****. The door moves the air supply from the AC evaporator between passing over the heater core, or directly into the cabin, without passing over the heater core.

Courtesy of Shoebox, from the factory manual:
