fuel gauge needle is off

I got a quick question, my fuel gauge needle reading is off. When the tank is full it is pegged all the way to the right (way past the the full mark). So the empty reading becomes the quarter tank mark. The gauge works fine its just an annoyence. I was wondering if I could take the needle off the gauge panel and move it to the full mark, when the tank if full of course

Wait, really? Is this only for certain cars? I've had my 95 z28 all the way down past the E line a few time and still had a gallon left....
