Crud build up behind waterpump 94 z28

I am in the process of changing my OPTI, and while removing my water pump to get to the OPTI I noticed the whole side of my engine has a massive build up of crud behind the waterpump, and all over the OPTI. Is this normal? If not what could be the issue? I really don't think my head gaskets are gone, no smoke or anything..no rad fluid in oil or other way around.

Probably timing cover round seals. Good time to replace them.

That wouldn't be caused by a head gasket leak. It's oil from the front seals as Rob indicates.

Awesome, thank you for the quick reply. I guess I'll be replacing some seals too!
