Converting a 96 RS to a SS

I have a 96 Camaro RS with a sniper body kit and working on lambo door kit. Just got an LT1 from a 94 police car. I was wondering what the specs are for the RS and the SS to see what i would need to change. Like the Computer or trany. Just needing a little help.

well the RS is a v6....so the engine, trans, computer, and probably the rear (for the posi).

besides that, the SS would have stiffer springs, possibly better shocks, stiffer sway bars, bigger wheels and the SS hood.

Yeah everything he mentioned and a V8 gauge cluster, that's all that comes to mind so far.

Wiring harness. Accessory brackets (the ones out of the caprice wont work) and accesories. Water pump, also different for f-body, intake elbow and air box. And probably some other stuff that none of us have thought about yet.

Damn......dude, you may just be better off getting rid of the RS and buying yourself an SS.

Seems like a lot of work and grief to me....

Re: Converting a 96 RS to a SS

front springs. It will require a stiffer spring to hold the additional weight of the V8.

radiator - the V8 is reverse cool and uses a diffterent radiator.

Drive shaft - the V6 shaft is 2 piece, the V8 shaft is 1 piece.

complete exhaust system. Headers, y-pipe and catback.

as mentioned above, the gauges will need to be replaced along with a bit of wiring work inside.

The transmission crossmember will need to be replaced.

The K-member (engine cradle) will need to be replaced with the V8 version.

I think the fuel lines are different too. The V6 fuel pump may not be adequate for the V8. I'm not sure about that.

You really should think about buying a wrecked V8 f0body to get the parts from. There are going to be tons of parts you'll need. Plan on rebuilding the entire car.

The RS will NEVER be an SS, so PLEASE don't badge it as one.

Actually this '96 RS was his first car he bought which is why he wants to do an engine swap. Also when were done with his car (just like mine) were removing all the badges. I thing the only thing on the car will be the back bumper camaro decal.

It would be sooo much easier to simply take an SS and put the RS ground effects on it.......

But mabye you have some sort of sentimental thing for your car.....

and cheaper... $$$

To properly do the driveline swap you will really need to buy a wrecked V8 car. Without a complete donor car to get the parts from it will get serously expensive. There are more parts to swap than you can even begin to imagine.

Well, if you're going to go all out and spend that much money converting a v6 to a v8, you might want to get a better engine. Unless this engine has been rebuilt, it probably isn't in the best condition. Cops tend to floor it a lot and abuse the engine... I have a 94 B4C z28, but I swapped engines out.

Good luck, though.

Look to clear things up I am not stupid..I know it would be cheaper to buy a new car with a V-8 in it.. I worked hard to buy the camaro i own. It was my first car and unless i total it i am never getting rid of it. I am not a mechanic...i am networking, infrastructure and security specialist in the Air Force. So yes the engine is getting rebuilt. My father-in-law is a mech. He is stepping me through rebuilding it myself. Making it a keepsake for me.
As far as labeling it SS i don't want the thing labeled as anything.
People act so stupid when you think someone is tring to make it a fake SS.
I only used the "SS" name in my opening request to emply that i want it to be as close as i can. If anyone else has anything constructive to tell me about changing it over i would very much appreciate it.
To the people that want to down the idea of changing it the way i want. you can just elect to keep stupid comments to yourself.

Thanks
