Car needs trans rebuild, does this sound right?
I was driving the other day and ran over a big *** stick, well the stick hit the tranny pan and I started leaking trans fluid everywhere. So I brought it to a mechanic to get it fixed thinking I would need a new tranny pan at the worst. Well it turns out I need a rebuild.
The invoice says: "Transmission was leaking from pan gasket, replaced filter/gasket. Road tested vehicle and found front seal leaking, transmission has internal failure causing fluid to leak past seal. Transmission rebuild required.
I don't know too much about transmissions, but does that sound like a reason for a rebuild? The car still shifts fine and the tranny doesn't noticabley slip.

I dont see how a pan leak could turn into a pump seal leak. Sounds like something fishys going on. Unless the pump was leaking before you brought the car in and wasnt bad enough to notice. The pump seal wouldnt cause the trans to slip FYI.

Nope, its not that bad of a job once you get the trans out of the car. But if your car has some miles on it, and shows some wear I guess it would be a good idea once you have it out. If I were you I would take a look at it yourself. Once you have the car up in the air, look around the front of the trans, under the bellhousing area, if you see a leak coming from somwhere up around the input shaft its most likely the pump seal.
