Can I clean my MAF with brake cleaner?

I got my MAF out of the car today for a non related maintenance problem (belt change), and noticed the MAF looked pretty dirty. Whats a good way to clean it safely? Can I just use brake cleaner? Or will that damage the sensors in the MAF?

I know CRC MAF cleaner is the best, but I have brake cleaner available to me right now, will it work?

no I wouldn't. Brake cleaner leaves a white residue that may affect performance.

I would just make a run to the parts store, not worth it to take the chance.

honestly, as long as its NON chlorinated, you should be alright, but to be safe, use electrical contact cleaner, or MAF sensor cleaner(yes, they sell it, fairly new product)

I know they have MAF cleaner out there, I just was trying to get the job done without having to make a trip in town. I have heard of other people using it before, but wanted more opinions perhaps from others that have tried it with either good or bad results.

if your gonna clean it you should use throttle body cleaner/using light sprays at good distance getting closer until it starts to clean it that should be fine-i've used that several times with no problem

only use maf cleaner or any other electrical cleaner, why risk the chance. even throttle body cleaners say do not use on maf sensors as it CAN damage the sensitive wires etc. better safe than sorry in my .02

NO its not. Do not use it.

Go spray some of that crap on some plastic and let it sit for a minute...you'll then know why.

That sensor is finnicky as it is and needs to read as 'true' as possible, dont risk the chance of throwing it to save 3$

Have you used it on a MAF before? Really looking for experience from those that have. Thanks

No, im not willing to throw a 300$ sensor in the garbage to find out.

It's simple.. the sensor on the MAF is coated with a plasticy protective film (for lack of better terminology)...and if you dont think brake cleaner wont hurt it..then you're mistaken

Kriekey! If a guy asks if he can install LT1 headers on an LS1 car, I'm sure he would get answers like "just go buy LS1 headers", but that still doesn't answer his question that he asked in the first place.

I didn't ask "what can I use" because I already know what I can use. I just want to hear from people that have used brake cleaner before, and what their results were.
