A/C Refrigerant and Compressor?

What kind of refrigerant does a 97 LT1 A/C system use? Is it harmful for the environment if released. I'm either going to need to replace my compressor or swap it out with one of those A/C delete pulleys. I'm hoping to discharge the system and install one of these two options. A/C compressor is making a metallic grinding noise when I start the engine up and has stopped working altogether. Any one have any recommendations on this?

Thanks

R134a

Yes it is harmful.

You must have it done by a person that can capture and recycle the refrigerant. DO NOT vent it to atmosphere.

I thought the R134 was a enviromentally safe replacement for Freon.

Re: A/C Refrigerant and Compressor?

that doesnt mean you should vent it to the atmosphere.

http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/608/faq.html#q2

Can I vent HFC-134a refrigerant?
It is illegal under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act to knowingly vent substitute refrigerants during any service, maintenance, repair or disposal of an appliance.

Epa is full of ****. i'm 608+609 certified. The epa doesn't even tell you how it makes it up too the atmosphere. How does it? Refriderant is heavier than oxygen. you can puddle refriderant in your hand. it goes down not up.

If you're talking about a puddle than a puddle of water also does down but when heated it goes through a chemical reaction a turns from a solid to gas. Well same with the refrigerant and also not to mention when they say its bad for the atmosphere that can also mean by killing trees you're impacting the atmosphere/environment, either way its bad! Unless you want your kid to be born with 1 leg, three nipples, and two noses...call a professional and pay the $50 to be safe. Good ones will only charge you a portion of release if they charge your system back up. (((Don't forget to replace the two gaskets on the back of the AC compressor))).

all this time I thought it was those chicks in the 80's with the aquanet teasin there hair up like peacocks that screwed up the ozone layer little did I know it was It was Mr puddle.
On a serious note please dont vent 134a to the atmosphere it contains chlorine and that my friend goes straight up and is what is most responsible for ozone depletion

Re: A/C Refrigerant and Compressor?

Go ahead and vent it! save ya fifty dollars. its not going too hurt anything. unless your in california. and you cannot get fined for it unless you have been trained and certified. Chlorine is in alot of stuff! R134a does not contain ANY chlorine atoms and is not harmfull too the ozone layer at all, but they say it has a slight effect on global warming (Which has not been proven). R134a is an HFC refrigerant, meaning it contains Hydrogen, Fluorine, and Carbon. HCFC refrigerants contain Hydrogen, Chlorine, Fluorine, and Carbon.
