A/C refill DIY or NOT?

Since I've done heads/cam install, I haven't gotten my A/C refridgerant refilled and the shop told me that because I let ALL of the freon out and disconnected everything to do the mods, that I'd have to pay around $235 to get the whole system checked and refilled. This sucks. I live in FL and it gets friggin HOT around here and very humid. I wanted to know if I could just go to target and buy the "new" R-149 or whatever and just hook it into the canister. Is it that easy, or do professionals need to do it. Please help, I want to drive my Z but can't cause it's waaay to hot. Thanks

i hear its a pretty easy process. They sell kits. Ive never done it because i ripped mine out but ive seen it done. Not hard at all especially if you dont have to replace and parts like the compressor or anything.

good luck.

First, how do you like that cam (233/239)? I am about ot put it in my 94 Trans Am and I can't wait.

My little brother got a heads/cam job done about a year ago and the guy who did it for him just used the R-134 (i believe) to refill his system. Everything was fine until this summer when his A/C stopped blowing cold air. NOw I don't know if it can be attributed to the refill, but maybe it is just coincidence. THe AC worked fine for about 9 months. I think it was just his AC condensor, but he sold the car before we got that taken care of.
Good luck

diy, easy

my ac has a little leak so it needs a refill every 2-3 months, so i can pay 10$ and do it myself or 50$ and wait in line ata shop.

just buy the can hook it up on the bigger ac line(the only one it fits on), turn it upside down and drain it in.

Topping off, a FILLING an empty system, are 2 different things..
An empty system should be evacuated [vacuumed out] before refilling..
235 sounds a bit steep for R134 tho..
Best to fill it with a proper set of guages also..
Do a search on AC.. I posted a link to Harbor Freight for a set of cheap but adequate guages[about 50 bux]

It's very nice

you'll love it.

very streetable, yet aggressive when you need it most. for an elegant cam, make it a comp cam.

That was hillarious, hell you might think about emailing a link to this post to Comp Cams. They might hook you up next time you need something, advertising like that for them

I got a HUGE stack of parts waiting to go in. 233/239 cam, COmp NSA 1.6 7/16 RRs, Comp hardened pushrods, Comp R lifters, guideplates, EX 612 springs/locks/retainers, SVO 30# injectors, Racetronix fuel pump, 3.73 gears, new radiator, gaskets, VIG 3200 stall, new vented opti (since mine is a 94 I am doing the swap), LT4 ED timing set, and a set of white face guages. I am also going to ge tthe heads ported by Jordon Musser and he is doing my tunign.

I think I "MIGHT" be impressed.

Good luck bud with the AC deal.

Good luck to you too, I did all those mods in my sig at once like you are. Fun, learning process, but major PITA!

looks like comp might need to give both of us some kickbacks now

ok, follow up question then. what are the consequences of NOT vacuuming the system out if it's totally empty? I mean, I'm thinking about just filling it up with the Target store's kit ($34.99) that comes with a cheap gauge, 3 cans of R-149, and the connections. Any strong opinions for or against this??

I know shoebox would probably discourage what I'm gonna do

if you dont vaccum down the system and get all the air out the 134 a will react with the air and become very acidic and eat all the seals out of the system everything that is rubber will be gone in no time att all just have them vaccum the system down make sure it doesnt leak and fil it your self

big money if you dont spend little money

As ramair96ws6 said. You really don't want air and moisture in your AC system. Get it vacuumed.
