Question 97 Z28 Security light stays on

My 97 z28 has had the security light on since I got it a few weeks ago. The car starts and runs fine. Every so often the pwr windows and radio will stop working until I unlock the car with the keyfob. This has happened when the car has been running and when it has been off. Where should I start to attempt to fix this? Thanks.

Security issues are usually posted in the general tech forum. You will find lots of threads there.

Thanks - Shoebox

Thanks, and thanks for all of your resources. I have replaced a zillion window motors thanks to your site. Also, fixed several heating problems.

I did search the boards for the security light problem, but couldn't find someone experiencing my issue. The car runs, but sometimes the radio and windows go out. My problem seems different. I guess I will start with the key and then start tearing things apart.

Thanks again.

Sounds like a problem with the retained accessory power (RAP) function of the body control module (BCM). That's what controls power to the radio and windows.

Moving........

Still in BCM hell

Purchased a salvage BCM matching my broadcast code with a key code of 11 despite my key being a 13. Plugged it in and the windows, top and radio are now functional. Problem is the car won't start. Had a locksmith come out and emulate all resistance pellets. After an hour or so going from code 2-15 the car still didn't start. Plugged the old BCM back in. Car runs but no radio, windows or power top. Where to now? Thx.

Did you verify the wiring was good from the key cylinder to the BCM? IOW, can you read the key pellet at the corresponding wires at the BCM connector?

My light has been on since I bought my car in 2004 and has never given me a problem with starting. I've just left it alone.

I am ruling out the lock cylinder because the the car starts with the old bcm and original key. I am not so much concerned about the security light as I am about the fact that the windows, radio and top won't work with the old bcm. Again, car starts fine with the old bcm.
