Question 96z28 trying to stall!!

After getting ac compressor changed my car was trying to stall cruising around 50 at 2000rpm the rpm was dropping and going up like crazy. 2000rpm, 1000rpm, 0rpm then back to normal and then did it again, I think it was the ignition coil wire weeks before the wire was disconnecting and I ask my local part store if they have the wire and they gave me a long Spark plug wire. I bought the ignition coil and now thinking, I think maybe is the wire? any differences? the cable that I was using is half of the wire that Im using now. Maybe is not doing contact well?

Re: 96z28 trying to stall!!

Is the engine actually changing RPM rapidly, or is it just the tach jumping around erratically? I seem to recall in the past you had a problem with the dash gauges (you called them gadgets) jumping around. I think I suggested you might have a bad ground.

Re: 96z28 trying to stall!!

The engine was changing rpms fast it was trying to stall. Sorry I call them gadgets because my english is not to good. I found something in the inigtion coil that seams to be a ground. There is a screw in the inigtion coil that holds 2 grounds and one of them is making contact with the engine and seams to be broken, Ill take some pics tommorrow.

Shoebox has a photo of what the ground stud on the ICM/coil bracket is supposed to look like.

Re: 96z28 trying to stall!!

I was thinking about your coil wire. While just making the wire longer won't affect anything electrically, if it's so long it's flopping around, it could be causing intermittent spark. If its a spark plug wire, it may not even fit the socket in the Opti correctly. And, if its so long that it is laying near the Opti harness wiring, it could be causing high voltage interference with the signal from the Opti to the PCM.

Get the correct wire.

Re: 96z28 trying to stall!!

The car has been acting kinda weird took the car to the Job and in the morning I turn on the car and Rev were going up and down. 1000RPM-900RPM 1000RPM-900RPM went the car hit 900RPM the car was shaking like it was miss firing really bad. After 3 minutes it stopped. I put the car on Reverse and again shaking really bad. The problem seams to be worst in Drive. The car was shaking and after 20 seconds it stop, so I decide to use it. In the highway cruising around 70mph the car change to a higher gear and it started misfiring really bad. I stop hitting the throttle and after few seconds it stopped. Drove 15 miles back home and it was driving like brand new. I'm thinking I have a bad optic but idk. I was thinking to start with the cheapest first, Maybe changing plugs and wires before anything else. There is anyway I can test Ignition coil and Module? I took the part to auto zone and they didn't have it & I don't feel traveling 4 hours just to get coil tested.
