5 & 6 speed shifter differences??

I have a 98 Camaro with the v6 and 5 speed manual tranny. My question is can I use a 6 speed aftermarket shifter on a 5 speed tranny? Thanks

If the shifters were interchangeable, I don't think you would see two different parts listed in the catalogs for T5 and T56.

I guess I'm a little fuzzy in the question

If you're thinking of using a Six Speed Shifter on a 5 Speed transmission, you'll still have 5 gears and I doubt the patterns are the same, so I don't think they will work well together even if it would bolt up.

If you asking about bolting up a 6 speed transmission in place of the 5 speed, then you'll need to make sure the transmission bolts up to the engine properly Which I'm thinking would not be true as the six speeds are for the V8s so most likely not compatible

I know there are two different part #'s and they don't say they are interchangable, BUT can you make just the top shifter fit the 5 speed. I know both have the little ball end and the base looks to have a different bolt pattern, but you can drill holes in anything. Has anyone done this. The reason I am asking is price difference. 5 speed shifter $150, 6 speed shifter $30. Big difference. Thanks

As far as I can tell the top plates are completely different (don't think drilling some holes would cure anything). It's a bit far-fetched to me to think they could possibly be compatible. See if you can work it out and prove us wrong.

If you can find a T56 aftermarket shifter for $30, buy it and try it. Are you sure you aren't looking at a "short stick" rather than a "short throw shifter"?
