2001 camaro shift **** help

I am looking to put a shift **** WITHOUT a button in my camaro, I've bought a few different shift ***** with buttons and quite frankly they all suck, and I really don't want to buy the adapter kit for the screw on *****. The problem is when the shifter shaft is depressed the key won't come out of the ignition, how would i go about disabling this? I know it's not "safe" but i'm very careful about things and it wouldn't be a problem for me. thanks!

As you have already noted, there are risks to doing it. Like someone starting the car in gear...
There is a interlock cable that goes from the shifter linkage to the steering column. You can take it off entirely or just disconnect it in the unlocked possition. If you just disconnect it there is a chance that it might shift into the locked possition by vibration or something and your key would be stuck until you unlock it.
