1997 z28...LT4

I'm new to this sight..so hi. A few months ago I sold my Porsche to a guy in Chicago. A guy I work with delivered the car and after the delivery he called me to tell me about a black 1997 z28 SS he came across for sell reasonable. I said jump on it. He brought it back and it sat in our back lot for a couple of months. One day I decided to check for all of the SS and SLP earmarks. There were several including ram air hood, 30th anniv. seats, floor mats etc. what caught my attention though was the red intake manifold. It needed a head gasket so my coworker did the work himself. Ive been a service manager for 25 yrs and he's been mechanizing for 40 yrs. we both work at the gm dealership. Several days later he informed me that the motor in the car was indeed an LT4, 2.00 intake valves, slightly closed combustion chambers, etc. with several SLP options I decided to decipher th factory rpo label on drivers door. Now I know very well that the 1997 Camaro did NOT come from the factory with an LT4 but this car like I said has the rpo code LT4 on the original rpo label, in other words installed at the gm factory. From my extensive research it may be the only factory installed LT4 in a 1997 Camaro in existence. I know it wasn't supposed to be installed or available but I am looking at the car. In my opinion the fact that it has some SS/SLP options is secondary to the fact that the rpo label states it was produced with an LT4. If any one has seen an example of this please let me know, I am extremely interested in any experience any one else has had with this. D jones

Call SLP with the VIN and ask them.

SLP has almost nothing to do with a factory installed rpo. I'm not describing an option that was installed after it left the gm plant. This option code is located on the original rpo label not the SLP auxiliary label. Every other 1997 Camaro including the 30th anniversary LT4 SLP prepared SS's listed the LT1 not the LT4 as the factory installed engine on the left door rpo label. Mine list the LT4 as the original engine on the left door rpo label. I've yet to see even one other example like mine. Maybe a prototype...I just don't know.

This was a special order car limited to 100 cars with 6 speed trans only. They replaced the LT1 with the balanced and blueprinted LT4 w/330 hp. Just go to 4th Generation (1993 - Present) and there is info on this.See general info then shoot down to what models. Then SS LT4 were available.Hope this helps. You sure are a lucky person to own one of these.

I would have thought that the LT4 was installed at the factory. I didn't think that SLP did engine mods to those.

But you indicate that the car has SLP options. They will know if they received the vehicle from the factory with the LT4 installed. They kept very detailed records.

It was just a suggestion.... and trying to help, not offend you. I read your original post very thoroughly, and understood exactly what you were claiming. But it's your car, research it however you like. I'll stop annoying you.

Fred...sorry if you thought I was offended..i certainly was not. I appreciate all and any help. The reason I haven't contacted them earlier is because the car does NOT have rpo codes r7t which was the slp Camaro identifier. also code z4c ss appearance pkg or wu9 anniversary z28 ss are NOT present on label. These codes are not present and I am fairly confident it did not go thru slp but you guys are correct, I do need to try and contact them anyway. I haave tried entering my vin on the slp registry and it comes back with no info..vin not found. My question is even if it was converted or not it should not say LT4 on the original rpo label. No Camaro i have ever seen whether it was an lt4 conversion or not has had this option code. It literally is the only example i have ever seen on the net and ive looked at many 1997 rpo labels trying to find another example without success. The 1996 grand sport corvette engine simply was not installed in the Camaro but this car has the tag and the engine is a legit lt4. I am dumbfounded. again i really appreciate any responses and help..thx again deron. ps does anyone know the phone number to the slp plant in new jersey..thx

SLP was bought by Roush back in 2013. Worth trying. Also consider contacting Ed Hamburger, who was an owner of SLP, and Vice President of Special Vehicle Operations. Then there is Scott Settelmyer of Chevrolet, also known as "the F-Bodfather". If Scott doesn't know, it probably doesn't exist. Scott used to post here from time-to-time, as did Ed.
