Unusual starting problem

Battery seems OK on meter (+12.5V) but trying to start cold engine get very quick loud clicking. After 5-6 tries (all with same clicking) car suddenly starts.
Sometimes I get nothing at all when turning key but that seems not to happen anymore. Where should I start to diagnose?
Another question: As I sat there, wondering why car would not start I remembered that a Chevy showroom was just down the street and I could have them flatbed car to their service dept. But, since I cant start car how can I get tranny shift out of park so car can be towed?

Re: Unusual starting problem

Battery cables. The terminals can sometimes get corroded.Hope this helps.Go to shoeboxe's site as I think the starter connection could be an issue.

Re: Unusual starting problem

Always easier to help if you tell us something about the car.... year, engine, trans, any modifications.

You mention "park", so you must have an automatic. When you turn the key to "run" and hold your foot on the brake, you should be able to move the shifter out of park. Engine doesn't have to be running.
