Fuel Smell

Can someone tell me how the charcoal canister works? Or why would my car be leaking fuel from the fuel tank itself if theres no pinhole? The fuel tank is about half full and I just cant figure out why this would be happening. It has been very gassy smelly as of late as well. What do you have to do to fix it?

Re: Fuel Smell

Are you sure its from the tank? I would attempt to figure out where the smell is coming from unless you already know. Maybe something is old and leaking or was damaged and not sealing correctly. If you can get under the car and check the condition of the tank, lines and look for any stains or leaking fuel. Under the hood is a possibility also. My schrader valve leaks unless the cap is on tight. The good news is the fuel lines and everything else are easy to trace and check.

Re: Fuel Smell

Oh yeah its definatly the tank. I crawled underneath it in the dark and you can see it dripping fuel off the tank itself. I REALLY do not want to pull that tank back out of that car that job sucks so bad!

Re: Fuel Smell

If it was me, I would tell you to do the trap door method if you plan on keeping the car. With fuel leaking, you have a fire danger that usually is a small risk. That way if it is something with the fuel pump you might be able to make the fix right there when that is open. Dropping the tank is the correct way to do it right, but I agree that is really a PITA. If you did the fuel tank recently, something probably is loose and it might be a very easy fix. I would guess it is the fuel line connections.

Re: Fuel Smell

The stupid fuel tank sprung a pin hole leak on the very bottom of it! I really wish these tanks in these cars were composite material rather than this tin steel crap! Anyway Ive got a new one ordered.

Thanks

Re: Fuel Smell

Are you switching to the plastic tank from the 99-02 LS1 cars? Or do you even have a 4th Gen - there is no info in your posts regarding which year F-Body you have?

You might want to add a "Signature" so we can help you without asking a lot of questions.

Re: Fuel Smell

94 Z28 yeah I know they went to composite in 99 so I didnt even bother trying to deal with it. I figured they probably changed something that wouldnt work so I said screw it.
