Turbo Build For Jason Short

Jason has enlisted my help in a stainless header hotparts kit. I will be providing fully welded stainless headers and tacked together crossover and DP for him to finish. I will document the build here for him. Jason, please chime in and discuss the setup and plans for the car.

Re: Turbo Build For Jason Short

Thanks Jon for all your help on this and for putting up with my high standards for this turbo setup/routing

Here is a basic rundown of my setup:

-396ci LT1, 9:1 compression
-T56 transmission
-McLeod street twin w/aluminum FW
-Spohn Extreme Duty driveshaft
-Strange S60 w/TruTrac, 3.54 gears
-Racetronix dual intank fuel pump setup
-Mufflex 4" catback
-EFI Connection 24x LS1 PCM conversion
-60# injectors (for now)

It's a total street car. I've had my share of NA solid roller motors in the past decade and want to build something that is much more docile to drive, yet more powerful. The only thing removed is the A/C, everything else stays.

I am not 100% sure on what turbo I am going to run yet, which is why I appreciate Jon offering the option to his customers of having the hotside as a "builder" kit (ie., the merge and downpipe only being tack welded together). I'm leaning towards the 76GTS which would fit my power goals for the car and be very street-friendly, albeit a bit on the small side for 396 cubic inches. In that case, a 82/83mm turbo might be what I settle on.

My goal for this setup is really just to have a car that I can drive and have fun with. The occasional trip to the track, run a mid-10 sec pass at 137-140mph on drag radials, drive home kind of thing. I'm not too concerned about 1/4 mile ET, but trapping 140mph would be a ride! The car will never be converted to an auto, even though we all know that autos/turbos are the most efficient way to go The car is not even remotely set up for drag racing (Koni shocks, Strano springs/swaybars, Baer front brakes, etc..).

Jon, thanks again for working with me on this one. I know my idea of how I wanted the hotside layout was/is a bit challenging!

Re: Turbo Build For Jason Short

I'll be using stock LT1 heads that have some minor work (real minor) along with larger valves. Nothing exotic on the top end for now. One I see how the car responds as a combo, I'll address what I want to do with the top end. I decided to put the money into the exact turbo setup for now instead of the heads

Re: Turbo Build For Jason Short

Jon,
Thanks for the new pictures! I can't believe how much plug access you pulled out of the drivers side header with the limitations I gave you regarding my routing needs!! Looks fantastic

Beautiful work!

Jason, I think I bought a t56 from you a while back for my rx7. Glad to see your car making progress, it should be a monster.

No problem Jason. The builder kits would just have the merge tacked, but i welded it all up for ya.
