Total Price

What am I looking at price wise to turbocharge a 97 Trans Am WS6 with the MP T70. I'd want it to run 12-15 pounds of boost safely. What pistons would you recommend? Intercooler? I'm hoping to be between 2000 and 4000.

Welcome to the forum. Boost costs a lot more than you think. Turbo & kit/fab parts, engine build, fuel system, tuning, instrumentation, drivetrain & traction upgrades...

Safely I would say to get you from a stock LT1 to 12-15 pounds of boost, just for engine, fuel system, and tune, around $14,000 on average. Would be more with top of the line parts. Would be less with cheap parts like Summit or Eagle.

You could build it cheap for $4,000, but my guess is you will blow the motor before you last a few passes at the track, then you'll be spending much more than $14,000 total price later.

Re: Total Price

True. It's tough to look at the total number. It almost makes me sick when I itemize the discrete components it has taken to get where I am today. But my car is sooo much freakin' fun now and as dependable as my wifes new car. Mine is a single turbo (PT7675) in a daily driven 96 Z28. I commute to/from Rochester from Albany NY every week so that's roughly 500 miles on that part alone, not counting the commutes from the hotel to the workplace and back nor fun stuff on the weekends(car meets, drag races at the strip, etc). Do as much work as you can to both save money and be familiar enough with the system to know if something doesn't sound/run right. Besides, doing the work when you can is fun! I learned welding and tuning (Speed Density - 2 bar MAP - via tunerpro) and fabricating to build/modify the hotside and all the cold side except the front mounted intercooler. Buy a bit at a time and the cost won't seem so punishing.
