Solution for crankcase evac -Vacuum pump

I have spent literally months trying to find a way to put a vacuum pump on my LT1. I have absolutely no room on the driver's side because of my turbo. And I'm not willing to give up power steering, which forces me to keep the stock accessory bracket. My last setup was a vented catch can off the valve covers and I was blowing oil out of every seal. So with the help of GZ Motorsports and my fellow LT1 community, I finally have a finished product.

I have a thread over at ls1tech that has a lot of information on this. The main thing that makes all this work is the custom bracket to mount the vacuum pump where the alternator was. A few people have come forward wanting this custom bracket so I found a metal shop that can make copies of it. I'm not trying to make a profit off these brackets. You pay what I pay. It's the least I can do to give back to the LT1 community. The shop told me it would cost $75 each. If anyone is interested or has questions just ask.

Re: Solution for crankcase evac -Vacuum pump

Yes, I did it also. A different approach off the crank down low off Rt side moto compartment rail.
Also used a GZMS pump (VP103 @ that time). I still have all acc except for the air cond pump. I could still run it since I have clearance for the AC compressor pump.
I had to move the rad to fit the vac pump. Running for appox 3 years now, on the street. I built my own catch can to feed oil to the pump vanes for lube. I had tried the GZMS can, but, it did not work well for me.
The vac pump mod eliminated all oil leaks, and, quite a boost in cylinder pressure with better ring seal.
App... 97ss 383 D1 supercharged MM6 trans.

Re: Solution for crankcase evac -Vacuum pump

I saw your setup when I was researching. It was too complicated for me and I didn't want to move the radiator forward. Good for you though.

Does the pump put off a lot of heat and noise?

The alternator relocation is pretty easy. You just need to cut a section out of the stock accessory bracket then make a bracket to attach the top bolt. I'm considering making more of the alternator brackets since people keep asking about it. All it is is a modified piece of angled aluminum.

Here is a list of my setup:
-GZ Motorsports Vacuum pump (VP101A)
-Dorman 5.69" vacuum pump pulley from local parts store (300-912)
-Custom vacuum pump bracket
-ASP 5.7" crankshaft balancer (ASP945100)
-ASP smaller alternator pulley
-Custom alternator bracket
-Stock length serpentine belt
-Star Machine -12AN Female vacuum regulator
-Star Machine -10AN fitting w/ baffle for valve cover
-Moroso breather tank (85402)

AN Fittings:
-12AN X 1/2" MPT 90 degree (out of suction side pump)
-12AN nut X -10AN male swivel reducer (after regulator)
-10AN straight pushlock hose end (after reducer)
-10AN 90 degree pushlock hose end (valve cover)
-10AN X 1/2" MPT 90 degree (out of exhaust side of pump)
-10AN 90 degree pushlock hose end (off exhaust fitting)
-10AN 90 degree pushlock hose end (off breather tank)
-10AN push lose hose (4 feet depending where you mount breather tank)

You can do whatever fittings you want. The only reason I mixed -10AN with -12AN is because I had left over -10AN from my other crankcase evac setup. Whatever crank pulley you use, it needs to be 5.7" or smaller so it doesn't over spin the vacuum pump. There are a bunch of vacuum pump regulators out there so use what you want.

Re: Solution for crankcase evac -Vacuum pump

Would the Vaccum pump not fit where the AC was or was this just easier?

thanks

Re: Solution for crankcase evac -Vacuum pump

We tried but there was no room. However, that was before I relocated the alternator which required to cut the stock bracket some. The vacuum pump bracket has the same bolt pattern as the alternator so technically they should be interchangeable. I can't believe that didn't cross my mind. I sent everything off to get powder coated but that's the first thing I'm going to check when it gets back.

Re: Solution for crankcase evac -Vacuum pump

Very cool, let me now what you find out if you dont mind. I spent a lot of money for a polished Alt and would rather stick the vaccum pump down there if at all possible instead of the Alt.

Re: Solution for crankcase evac -Vacuum pump

I was able to mount the vacuum pump where the A/C was. The only additional thing needed was two spacers to make the pulley line up with the belt. You also have to cut a section out of the stock accessory bracket the same way if you were going to put the alternator there.

Would you be interested in selling the little parts needed to mount the stuff? I can buy all the rest.

Thanks
Steve.

That's all I planned on offering. The custom vacuum pump bracket and two bolts is all you need to mount it where the alternator was. Putting it where the A/C was will need some additional spacers that I can give you advice on if you need it. I'm going to get a couple brackets made soon so if you want one just let me know.

Re: Solution for crankcase evac -Vacuum pump

I had my local shop make a few brackets which mounts the vacuum pump where the alternator was. If anyone wants one, let me know.
