18 gauge mild steel header tubing, what should I do?

I know now that 18 gauge tubing will not take the heat from a friend that blew holes through his. Anyways, I really do not want to make another set. Will ceramic coating help the tubing stay together? My only other option is to make a set out of 16gauge stainless. What do you guys think?

The guy doing my project said I needed atleast 16 guage tubing. My only suggestion would be to ceramic coat like you said and to keep timing in the engine to keep he header temp down.

I'm using inside/outside Jet Hot coated 16ga on my setup. I was going to ceramic coat them, but ceramic coating on the inside of a turbo header isn't a very good idea.

Why is that? I had mine ceramic coated in and out and never had a problem

mongse are you talking about the coating that looks like chrome? Any coating that is shiny has aluminum in it and will only last to around 1300 degrees and could start flaking off. I could see not using that in a turbo header but there is stuff out there that will last to over 2200.

I had a set of turbo headers coated @ Swain Tech in NY last year. They would not coat the insides because they were concerned about the coating flaking off and going into the turbo (which I can see with the expansion/contraction of the metal).

The coating I'm using is the JH2000, not the average 1300* header coating. I think it's gray if I remember correctly. I know Jet-Hot will coat both sides since I've already seen it done on a turbo manifold.

I had mine coated at BDC in Alabama, I think coating the inside is pretty standard. I thought the reason to coat them anyway is to keep them from rusting. I wouldn't have a set of mild steel that hasn't been coated inside and out.

I completely agree with this. I almost went to a 304 stainless design because of the whole ceramic thing.

Coating the inside of a turbo housing is not a good idea because the coating itself adds to the metal causing clearancing issues. Then your coating flakes off because of contact.

As for 18 gauge, weigh your options, cost of coating vs redoing a pair of headers. I would rather do 16 gauge then to have the 18 coated end up blowing out in the end.

Ok thanks guys. I think I'm going to go 304 stainless polished 16gauge in the very near future. I'll probably keep these for dyno time and then when it's back on the road I'll make the stainless
