Will a pellet gun Kill a Racoon at close range?

I have had a Raccoon problem for months now. I have tried trapping it but its just too big for my trap. I have caught the sucker on tape knocking over my cans and he is every bit of 30 lbs.

My township will not do anything... they said they will only trap a problem animal if its a domestic animal. Wild animals are my responsibility.

I dont want to just poision it becasue I cant be 100% sure the neighbors cat wont come eat the bait and I would just feel bad if I killed a cat or something.

So I have a Daisy pettet gun. Its CO2 powered and shoots .177 caliber pellets. I have it loaded with 35 rounds of the pointed pellets and a fresh co2 cartridge.

My question is do you think a co2 powered pellet riffel will kill a racoon at a range of less than 5 feet? I am going to wait up for the sucker with the gun out the window. He is within 5 feet of the window at the trash cans, and I think a shot to the head at that range would kill it. My friend doesnt think it will. He wants to come sit on my roof with his bow and wait for it.

Depends. It very well could but don't be surprised if it doesn't. A .22 would do the trick better.

i would say its dependant on FPS, and where u hit the animal.

I think it could, but it's not guaranteed by any means. If you don't kill him he'll run away and suffer a lot. Not very humane. Get a bigger gun or find another way.

Re: Will a pellet gun Kill a Racoon at close range?

Yeah but I dont have a .22 handy. If it doesnt kill it I wont be supprised. I just think at that range I have better that a 50/50 chance in killing it. My cousin thinks I have less than that. If it doesnt I'll be on the roof this weekend waiting for it at 1 am.

Re: Will a pellet gun Kill a Racoon at close range?

why don't you just trap it?
Anyways, I have a .177 cal air gun as well.. and I don't know. It's iffy... that thing has some power (especially the first few shots), but a 30lb racoon... I doubt it. I think you'll probably just injure it.

Re: Will a pellet gun Kill a Racoon at close range?

BTW, I have tried to trap it and been unsucessfull. He know knows to not step on the plate and steals the bait every time and not set off the trap. I refuse to pay $350-$500 to have it trapped (prices I got when I called around). And the township wont do a thing... I know it may not kill it and it may run off and suffer a bit. But I just dont care anymore. I tried the humane way and no good. I'm not gonna drop a morgage payment to keep it alive.

at 100ft the gun will burry a pellet into the tree about 1/4"... I think its powerfull enough.

No. I wouldn't even try it with a 22 short much less a pellet gun. Humane way to do it is with a 22 long or a shovel.

I doubt it. I mean, I've hit those things with a car and had them run off, I don't think a pellet gun will do any damage.

Just leave food in your neighbor's yard to keep it out of yours!

Re: Will a pellet gun Kill a Racoon at close range?

I have an rws that shoots 1000 fps. I shot a groundhog at 10 ft in the head. He went crazy. It would of been more humane to use a 22 but I dont wanna go to jail for shooting in the city. If you had a powerfull 22 airgun it would work. But those are around $200.

I guess in your situation the bow would be better as long as hes a good shot.

Re: Will a pellet gun Kill a Racoon at close range?

Observations based on my critter experiences.

BB gun probably won't kill it, but might p*ss it off, and you're close. They have seriously dense hide. Would you like rabies shots?

22 Can be pretty humane if you're a good shot. Guy next to me at work has coon problems, and he started trapping after chasing 3 or 4 22cal wounded ones into the woods near his house

BB gun from safe distance, (bruising shot) might be good to scare it off. Especially if it's smart enough to avoid traps.

Consider alternate means. Animals mark territory with urine. I've successfully chased off possums by dumping my p*ss in their den. Maybe you could sprinkle some around the problem areas to mark your turf? Just be sure to pee in a cup though, don't wanna have your junk hanging out with wild critters around. Ouch. Good luck
