Question "This is why we can't have nice things" whats this line from?

I keep hearing this line everywhere and I tried to find out where it originated but can't find anything via google. Everyone that says it has no idea where it comes from.

Anyone know?

I can remember hearing it in a Jeff Foxworthy routine about 15 years ago, but I'm not sure if it originated from there or not.

I remember my parents saying it before Foxworthy was around. Somehow I think it is from the 70's.

Ever get this one?
"Are you trying to break that?"

My mom said it to us all the time when we roughhoused with things.

Its from an 80's movie, forgot the title but it was on the lifetime movie network like three weeks ago. The movie was about a black family with an alcoholic father that constantly smashes stuff up. The quote was uttered by the protagonist within the first five minutes of the movie. It was called bronx something.

I think it's a line from a thing called "life."

I remember my mom saying stuff like that to me back in the 1960s, and I'm sure she wasn't the first.
