Gun registration does not exist, at least not in most states.

How did you acquire the gun? Handed down to by family? Check your local laws first, you may not have to put it in your name. Personally because I'm not legally obligated to do so, I will never register a family heirloom firearm as it is none of governments business that I inherited something personal.

Here in Louisiana, I can sell/gift a firearm that I personally own to a friend or relative as long as they are of legal age and meet all required criteria. In addition they do not need to register the gun. It is wise however to get some form of documentation of the transfer. Such as a notarized bill of sale with the serial number and signature of all parties involved of said firearm transfer.

To register the gun you can contact a local firearm dealer or someone who has an FFL. They can then call to register the gun for you. But depending on state laws you may not have to register the gun.

Not in Texas. You can buy any gun from an individual as a private sale and have no record whatsoever that the transaction ever took place. Keep in mind that it's usually a good idea to get a bill of sale in case any previous owners try to claim that the gun was stolen.

Friend bought the pistol for my while i was out of town, once i came back i paid him and he gave it to me. The only reason i'm asking is i'd like to do my CHL with it and i don't want any problems.

Allow me to detail for you the extensive procedures I went through to purchase my XD.

1. Go meet seller.
2. Inspect gun.
3. Hand seller cash.
4. Return home with gun.

Federal law does not give two craps about private sales of non-NFA items.

not 100% true. that only applies to non-NFA weapons. if its a NFA weapon you have to follow federal transfer regulations and register it to you.

What about NYS laws? I'm pretty sure that they're more **** about that.

I'm pretty sure they are, too. But since I don't live in NYS, nor do I ever intend to, I'm not too concerned about them. And I'm definitely not able to tell you what they are.

In NY, the firearm's serial number has to be on you license for you to even touch it outside of a gun store. You pay for gun, go to county clerk, have it added to your permit, then go back to store and claim it. I am not kidding you. Of course, it takes 6 months, 4 character witnesses, 5 sets of fingerprints, blah blah to get the permit. PITA Florida was so much nicer when I moved here.

Oh the positive side, you can carry it about anywhere. Bars, public sporting events, yadda yadda. You are liable if you shoot drunk and are wrong, but if you go to a bar to have a drink with colleagues, and get jumped in the parking lot, you can defend yourself.

I wouldn't want a gun registered in my name anyway.

I got a hunting ticket on Christmas a few years back and did not like the fact they recorded the serial and now have knowledge that I have it.
