I paid my last semesters tuition on 12/08/2010 for the January 2011-May 2011 Spring term. I graduated in May 2011, and have been working in the KC area full time since then.
My dad claimed me on 2010 taxes because I was still a student, and obviously he got more tax credit than I would have got if I claimed myself (though technically I probably should have claimed myself since I paid the vast majority of my living expenses) My dad only claimed my Fall 2010 tuition on his taxes because he figured I would be claiming my Spring 2011 tuition on my 2011 tax return. My 2010 1098-T (or is it E?) had the money for both terms on it, since my Spring 2011 tuition was paid in 2010.
So question is, is there anyway I can claim my Spring 2011 tuition on my 2011 tax return, or should my dad file an amended 2010 tax return for the extra tuition to get some extra money back?
Thanks, just wanted to double check on this before I filed. I filled out my tax return on Tax Cut last night.

My girlfriend and most other May grads. I know that have student loans are claiming the Spring '11 semester this tax season. But like johnnyb said, make sure you have an '11 1098-T.

You get to deduct in the year that you PAY, that's true also to any property taxes / mortgage deduction. so per your question, you Dad has to amend his 2010 return.

I re-filed for 2006 in 2010 (last chance) for exactly what you're talking about. I didn't think it'd go through, but I was able to claim tuition paid for the Spring semester (loan disbursed in Fall) even though my parents claimed me in the Fall.
