Is it safe to spray the water hose under your hood?

I'm cleaning all the sand off my car from the beach yesterday... I've never sprayed a hose under my hood though, is it safe? What should I avoid getting wet? Just the battery and coil packs, right?

Just be sure not to get any water mixed in with your headlight fluid and I think you'll be good to go.

Yes, that's what happens when you go to the beach.

Re: Is it safe to spray the water hose under your hood?

The beach we go to (the only one in Galveston where you can have alcohol) there is nowhere to park except on the sand, and it was real crowded so I had to drive down the beach a bit to find a place.

Some people, like my friend in his Mustang, decided they didn't want to drive on the beach so they parked on one of the streets that leads to the beach. Yeah, he got towed, and it cost him $215 to get his car back.

... And he's not wondering how to get the sand out of his engine bay

Dont do this with an LT1 too...

(I know you've got an LS1, just getting the warning out there...)

I hosed all the sand out of the engine bay and everything's just fine. So no biggie.

As long as you don't spray directly on electrical components, generally you'll be fine hosing off an engine. I use engine brite and hose off my engine about twice a year. I'm just extra careful around my alternator, pcm and opti. No problems here.

i spray my entire engine off with a high pressure hose (like at the do-it yourself car washes) like once a week, electronics and all... i don't put the nozzle very close at all... but unless you got an lt1 with the optispark, i wouldn't worry about it...

i asked in ls1 tech and they all said there isn't really anything to worry about

Re: Is it safe to spray the water hose under your hood?

I doubt the alternator would be something to worry about. Considering it's at the bottom of the engine bay on an LS1, I'm sure it gets a fair share of water on it when you drive when it's raining.

But yeah, I sprayed down everything in the engine bay, electrics and all, and there's no problems. Everything's pretty water tight I guess.

No harm at all. I work for Benz and anytime I do anything messy under the hood I hit it up with an acidic clenser and hose it off. Good as new!
