How do all you Florida residents like living there? Good/Bad, Things you'd change?

I live in Cali right now and definitely enjoy the weather and things to do, but I visited Florida a couple years ago and loved the whole tropical feeling. There were also some stuff I didn't enjoy too much like getting 9 bug bites in 3 days, humid summers but I think I could live with it.

So, for all you people that live in Florida or haved live there before how would you compare it too Cali (would also be nice if you have lived in both). Are the taxi's higher than california, car insurance, employement oppurtunities, etc. Any information would be awesome, and I know all this info would be dependant upon your where-abouts in Florida but that's okay. I might be going to school there, but we'll see. Thanks!

Re: How do all you Florida residents like living there? Good/Bad, Things you'd change?

You've already been to Florida ... so you already know what's like ... that "tropical feel" is it, the entire state is essentially the same. That is the biggest contrast between Florida and California. California is very diverse ... deserts, mountians, delta, and coast. Flordia is the beach and the swamps/southern rain forest.

As far as lifestyle ... you'll find Flordia a lot less expensive. No state taxes, housing is cheaper.

Most of the state has a rural feel to it ... kind of in a Bakersfield/Fresno way in the major metro areas and the rest of the state is like truck stop ... think Barstow.

If you are minority, you'll also find a lot of risidual redneck racism/segregation in Florida.

i wouldn't say there is a ton of racism in florida ... maybe out in the sticks there is, but generally your not going to run into that... hell, the local wal-mart's make their almost all announcements in spanish.

i couldn't ever live in california ... every time there is a stupid news story about ultra-political correctness or whatnot, its always from california.

one of the big things about florida compared to california is that the cost of living differential is HUGE!

All really good info, thanks! I have to say I was also loving Miami a whole lot. I'm just trying to figure out if it's one of those places I'd love to go on vacation too, or would I actually like living there. I have lived in California all my life, so I'm accustomed to everything here, but that could happen whereever you live whith some time.

This is one thing I have wondered about. I hear it is less expensive in Florida but only if you live on the outer skirts of cities. Miami or tampa seem like it would be expensive to live in. Then again, where I live right now is expensive so I can only think it would be about the same.

a good big house in a decent neighborhood is in the low 200's around orlando.

orlando is nothing but outskirts ... its one giant urban sprawl. traffic sucks real bad, but being from california its probably not as bad.

if you move into the central florida area just be ready for no realistic mass transportation other than the bus system, and no one knows how to drive.

I'd learn to speak spanish before moving to Florida

I have an aunt, cousin, grandma and other family that lives in Orlando. I must say that I really like that place. From what I've seen it's a very clean and well kept city for the most part. It's also nice to leave the 20-something degree weather here in Tennessee and go visit Orlando and get more sun than I know what to do with. It's really nice in the "winter" if you can even call it that down there. The summer is ok in Florida but I have two major gripes about it- 1) it's unbearably humid, and 2) there is a thunderstorm EVERY afternoon.

If I had to move somewhere I would not be opposed to moving to Florida.

When driving, pay attention ALL THE TIME. Eyes glued to who evers near you. People cant drive here - wach out.

Yep. I live in Jacksonville and it is pretty darn segragated. Keep in mind that if you go anywhere more than 30 miles inland it is just like southern Georiga, not the "tropical" picture most people come up with. I love it here, never want to live anywhere else. Maybe a different neighborhood, but never anywhere but Jacksonville.

Also, no emissions testing here

Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis?

We just had a bad year...I've lived in south FL for about 17-18 years (not consecutive) and Frances was the first Hurricane I've ever been thru. Now, if the '04 hurricane season repeats itself in '05...I might start to get worried.

South Florida is pretty nice, especially around this time of the year and the Orlando area is nice too.

And I third or fourth that most people down here cannot drive for s**t.

You have to realize that north/parts of central florida is pretty much considered the south. Orlando and south of that is totally different from that "traditional" south.

In north florida, if you live near the ocean you will get that tropical feel. Go inland and it is gone. Also, North FLA (jax, St. Augy) has some the best surfing spots in the state.

Oh yeah, is hurricane season that bad. What cities are the most affected, and do you think its necessary to get some sort of hurricane insurance (if thats even possible).
