Do you need to be ASE certified to open an Auto repair shop???

I am thinking about a career change and was wondering if you need to be ASE certified to open up your own Auto mechanics shop?

I am currently an aircraft mechanic (for 8 years) in the military and have been seriously thinking about opening up my own shop. Just wondering if there are any restrictions on that type of thing.

Re: Do you need to be ASE certified to open an Auto repair shop???

Im not really sure, but in todays market it really helps to have all of the training you can .. I have worked in a dealership for 14 years and the last four have really been tough and Im ASE/GM certified in both mechanics and body (retired from body) but its really tough to make it in todays marketalot of smaller shops in my town anyway have closed and even the local Goodyear tire store that was in business for 20 years closed this past summer, dont mean to sound glum but I just dont think its a good time to get into the repair business.. but it may be different where you are GOOD LUCK !!

I can't help with the cert question but as for BBCAM's response, my family is friends with a guy who owns a mobil station and the guy is swamped. He is ALWAYS looking for GOOD mechanics because he has so much business.

Re: Do you need to be ASE certified to open an Auto repair shop???

We owned and operated a successful motorcycle shop for 16 years and I wasn't certified in anything!

Some of my mechanics were and some weren't.

From a legal standpoint, it did not matter at all.

Some systems you will still need certification to legally work on...ie air conditioning systems, although that isnt ASE, still needed if you want to do it.
