Sealing EGR on Pacesetters

I have a concern about the seal between the plate and the fitting on my pacesetter lt's. The surface on the headers that the plate bolts to isnt completely flat so when its tightened down, there is a slight gap on the side opposite the bolt. I loaded it up with rtv and am letting it sit overnite before I start it. Any ideas on what to do if it doesnt seal? I was reading somewhere about trying an expansion plug, but dont know if the material on the plug can withstand the heat from the exhaust.
