Kooks stepped stainless headers

When is it necessary for larger primaries for a headers settup? I currently have the jethots on my car with 1 3/4 primaries and they are starting to rust out pretty good. Im looking into a set of stainless steel headers. Kooks seems to be pretty nice, a tad expensive but hey it is tax season lol.

Anyways they have the normal 1 3/4 primary settup or the stepped 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 settup and im wondering what kinda power/gains or settups would it be necessary for the larger primaries?

Also are there any other makers of stainless headers out there?

Any good info would be well appreciated

Re: Kooks stepped stainless headers

I've read that the 1 7/8" primarys stepped to 2" is a good set up for stock LS1's and LT1's,and can handle up to 550hp. More then 550hp you want 2" primarys. And with the 1 7/8 it ranges from 7 to 28hp increase depending on who you beleave. The Kooks long tube systems looks like one of the best on the market right now. The other ones I've heard of that are good are Texas Speed,Pacesetter,American Racing Headers and Quick Time performance.
All of this is what I've read,so don't hold me to it.

Re: Kooks stepped stainless headers

not trying to say your wrong or trying to be right, but i know plenty of people still running 1 3/4 headers pushing well over the 550 range. Im not sure what im aiming to do in the near future as far as power but im searching for a header settup that i will not have to worry about again.

So being as anything could happen sooner or later i just want to know when it would be needed for larger header primaries?

Re: Kooks stepped stainless headers

I'm pushing 800 flywheel HP through a pair of slightly modified 1-3/4" AS&M midlengths. Header selection was verified with extensive engine dyno and chassis dyno testing. They came off a 383ci Vortech S/C'd 30th SS convertible, that was switched to some Hooker LT's (also 1-3/4") at about the 850-900 flywheel HP level. I think when he reached 1,350HP - still a Vortech S/C'd 383 - he was using Lemons 2" primaries. Car ran low 8's at close to 170MPH.

S/S minimizes the rust issue, but cera-metallic coating offers additional advantages of lower under hood temperatures, and a few extra HP from the higher primary velocity and increased scavenging.

Re: Kooks stepped stainless headers

I have the full Kook's coated stainless long tubes with catted Y pipe on my LT1 and they are very well made and fit great. I don't have any where NEAR those 800+ HP numbers in my car and it still runs great. Like mentioned unless you are shooting for well over 1000+ HP the straight 1-3/4" head pipes should work fine for you. You probably won't see much of any HP increase over your existing headers but if you get the Kooks coated they will look nice for a long time and keep from rusting MUCH longer over any steel headers.
