Where to buy a new rear end

Re: Where to buy a new rear end
My friend and mechanic at first was looking for a good used rear (oem 10 bolt), but not luck, they all had similar issues to mine. At that point we were talking about $1K for a swap out with my new gears. I suggested new by this time, but I am looking at $3k (+ or - a few hundred). I can't find anything in between. Do I have any options for $2k? Stock engine and I don't plan on any major changes.

Re: Where to buy a new rear end
What rear axle issues have you had, with basically a stock engine? I know the M6 is hard on the rear, but my stocker survived a setup that was a bolt-on engine, a 125-shot of nitrous, and the M6.

Re: Where to buy a new rear end
It all started with the rear pinion going bad. Since we had to replace it, changed the gears from 3.42 to 3.73. Three months later the pinion was going again. This time they took the rear apart and found that the carrier was bad. I would go with another 10 bolt, but the ones my friend has found so far, he would not use them. At this point he does not even want to use my housing because of what he found inside. Not sure of what he saw, he has the know how to rebuild them, he has been looking for a good donor and then then we will use my new gears and brakes. So looking for a 3 channel donor, got another lead I need to check out. the car is located in Northeast PA.

Have you seen these articles:
Strengthening The Rearend From An LS1 Firebird Formula - High Performance Pontiac Magazine
Fourth-Gen 10-Bolt, Part 2 - High Performance Pontiac Magazine
Good input on upgrades, cost, how-to, etc. In the end, they spent close to $2,000 but that includes powder coating and appearance. If you aren't going to race your car, or invest in a 400HP engine, some of these ideas might be enough. I paid $2,800 for a Strange 12-bolt (Super-strength Eaton posi, ABS) 16 years ago, and it's served it's purpose well. But it handling a lot of HP/torque, and the first two years the trans was still an M6.... 5,000 RPM clutch dumps with a McLeod Street Twin, on very sticky tires on very sticky tracks.

Re: Where to buy a new rear end
I ran my 12-bolt with the stock steel driveshaft and the cross-over u-joint that came with the rear. No real problems handling rational HP. When the stroker was built , I dropped over $700 on an ACPT carbon fiber shaft. It was a disaster, with the front metal yoke assembly tearing loose from the CF tube. Did that with the car being driven from the engine shop to a body shop for the WS6 hood install, with a "just good enough to keep it from stalling" tune. Took several months arguing with ACPT to get my money back.

Re: Where to buy a new rear end
I am going to bite the bullet and purchase the Strange S60. A little more than a 12 bolt, but you get so much more. Don't plan on replacing it for the rest of the time I have the car, which I hope is a long time.

Re: Where to buy a new rear end
I bought the Strange 12 bolt for my '95Z. Paid extra for powder coating. It went in easy enough and looks great. I also got a B&M rear end cover and had it powder coated black.
One thing I didn't expect is my 12 bolt came with extra mounts for relocating the rear lower control arm making add on relocators unnecessary. That was nice.
I'm sure you'll like having the S60.
