Re: what do i have on pos traction
I guessing 3:42 gears.
limited slip
both tires will spin when you step on the gas. but while you are driving the locker or something
will slide so only one axle is in contact with the gear this is done to make the car turn
& handle better. there is more to it than that but that's all I got

Re: what do i have on pos traction
When you looked at the "carrier" that the ring gear is bolted to, did it have some springs and metal brackets inside it, as shown in this photo:
Auburn High Performance Series Differential 10 Bolt 7.5" (3.25-up)-- 28 Spline - Tick Performance
That's an Auburn limited slip unit for a GM 7.5/7.625" rear axle.
The numbers on the gears only identify the gears - not the carrier. The gears will work with either type rear. For the record the "13:42" means 42/13 = 3.23 gears. I suspect the "5/8" indicates a 7.625" diameter and the "3" means it's a 3-series carrier (for gear ratios 3.23 and numerically higher).
Put the rear wheels on some wet pavement. Floor it. If the car moves ahead with both wheels having traction, you have a "posi". If it just sits there spinning ONLY one wheel, you don't have a posi, or if you do, it's worn out.
