Question Transmission Shift Cable Replacement - Help! In Progress now!

Edit: Stuck on getting the Grommet to seat right. Could use any tips! Stuck over an hour trying to get this thing in!!

Replacing my transmission shift cable this weekend, I've found a shoebox article on how to adjust the shift-cable - looks fairly straight forward:

Adjust A4 Trans Linkage

Right now my Old Cable has a hose clamp on it (my mechanic did this a year ago and said it was just a short term solution and I should replace it in the near future) - I haven't looked at this fix close up myself yet...

Is there anything else I need to be aware of when replacing the cable VS just adjusting it?
Should I install the cable in Neutral as well?
What broke in the first place, and how can I prevent my new cable for this ?

Re: Transmission Shift Cable Replacement

Half way through this job right now and stuck on trying to get the old grommet out. The cable and setting the distance looks easy, its just this damn grommet!

Does the console need to be removed or just the shifter panel?
Is the grommet supposed to be pulled from the bottom or out the top (god help me if its the top!)

My console appears to be a bit of a pain to get out, the ABC/Convertible switch/Lighter panel seems like it detatches, but i can't find the tabs for it :S It also looks like the grommet is barely visible/accessible from above!

Any tips would be appreciated!!

Re: Transmission Shift Cable Replacement

5 minutes later I just used some good long pliers and pulled it straight out via the cable from below! It did need a solid amount of force. (the tabs in the console area need to be depressed and the snapped in assembly pushed down a tad of course) Hope this helps someone!

Console does not need to be removed, just the shifter plate.

Re: Transmission Shift Cable Replacement

Getting this new grommet in is proving harder than a spark plug change
