Transmission Advice
Hey guys,
Looking for some advise I have a 96 Z28 with 4L60E 3.73 rear and I lost my 3rd and 4th gear. 1, 2 and reverse is all good. Any chance that this could be a bad solenoid? Or do I need to have the tranny rebuild? I prefer a beefier trans but stock would be cool for now. Anyone know what kind of pricing for the service work.
Thanks

Re: Transmission Advice
3-4 clutch failure is very common in stock (and most "built") 4L60Es. GM designed atleast 6 different design flaws into these transmissions that promote the failure. Unfortunately, most shop either don't know what they are or how to fix them. These flaws become an even larger problem in a performance 4L60E. It has to do with pressure, clamping force, accumulation, apply rate, and the clutch and steel material. The price will vary. Just as an example, we charge as much for a 9 second proven 4L60E as many shops charge for a stock build. Our price for that build is also roughly half the price that some other shops are charging for transmissions that aren't as capable. comparing transmission builds between various builders can be very difficult because of alot of "smoke and mirrors". Since the general public doesn't know very much about automatic transmissions, less than reputable shops will do some really shady things. We constantly see stuff come in that has been built with bad/worn parts or builders not installing the parts advertised. Even if they do put a bunch of good parts in it, it takes much more than just the parts.
