trans slips at WOT but shifts ok otherwise ?

trans slips at WOT but shifts ok otherwise ?
1995 Z28 A4
except for the 1-2 shift which is kinda harsh even at low speed (shift kit maybe) all gears work fine during normal driving. at WOT there is a shaking, then the revs go up but the car does not accelerate
. i've worked on cars since the late 90's but i've never had any trans issues. what am i looking at here? full rebuild? something i can do myself? what other vehicles can i get a transmission from? not looking for performance rebuild, stock rebuild or replacement is fine.
