Stall Converter Choices!

Hey guys, sorry for asking a problematic question that's been asked to death, but im new to the stall world and need a little advice please...My 95 TA has a mild cam with upgraded injectors, rockers and springs as well as long tube headers and a couple other little things. What is a recommended stall size as well as one that is affordable. Thanks for any and all input and advice.

Also, i currently have 2.73 gears so any upgrade advice on these would be awesome also!

Re: Stall Converter Choices!

What's your definition of affordable ? The old adage of you get what you pay for is true for torque convertors. Buy a $400 convertor, then it turns out it doesn't perform as you expected, then buy A $800 convertor (up to $1200 total outlay now) and it performs better than you expected. If you're paying a shop for install, could be twice. If you're installing yourself, time is twice. Everyone is always afraid to go big, forget the 2400-3000 range,go 3600-4000.
Yank and CircleD are popular with MANY satisfied users. Contact them to get their opinions.
2.73s' will make any convertor seem to be 'loose' and 'looseness' is slippage, slippage is heat buildup, Gonna need an aftermarket supplemental tranny fluid cooler.
A convertor allows you to jump immediately into a higher part of the powerband instead of climbing thru the lower rpms to get to that better part.

I would do gears first. 3:73

Stall...a subjective ? as everyone will have their own opinion on what is tolerable on the street. You should drive a car with xxxx stall if you can.

small cam...2600-2800...but then again "my" opinion. Others will say 3200-3600.

one of the more common findings of higher stall TC's is you will see higher revs initially to get the car going in daily driving. Some feel this is no big deal while others find it annoying.

Don't cheap out on whatever stall or size TC you get and plum in a external cooler

Re: Stall Converter Choices!

no cam-stock-3600
small cam-3600
big cam-4000

yes,get ride in a few cars with convertors. In the ride,note/record what the rear gear is,what the convertor brand and style, what the rated stall is.
brand will effect how the ride is such as a TCI 3000 w2.73 or 3.23 will feel loose in stop&go city driving compared to a Yank SS3600 w2.73 or 3.23 will feel tight in stop&go city driving.
As I stated in my post above, don't do it TWICE !!!
Yes 3.73s' are the consensus most popular.
Gears first-nice-improved acceleration in all gears, less freeway mpg but not by a lot. but you still gotta climb thru the lower horsepower lower rpm range.
