second gear

I am considering purchasing a 98. Z28 with A4. The owner says it won't shift into 2nd gear unless you let off the gas. Any ideas on what this can be?
The price is right even if the trans needs rebuilt. Was just wanting to get a feel for what I mite have to do to it.

Re: second gear

Sometimes on the 4l60e transmissions and the separator plate 1-2 check ball will get stuck in the plate.

Re: second gear

I was thinking it could be a checkball problem. Thanks for the info. I will drop the pan and valve body and have a look see. Be a good time for a shift improver kit any way. 😊

Re: second gear

Well, I replaced both shift solenoids, new filter and fluid and installed a B&M Shift kit.
I still have no second gear.
1st, 3rd, 4th and OD work fine.
You have to get up to 25+ mph (2500-3000 rpm) and let off throttle for it to shift 9ut of first. It then goes into 3rd skipping 2nd gear.
If you manually put shifter into 2nd (up or down shift) when it goes into second its like putting it into nuetral. No slipping, just nothing there.
I checked servos for damage when I had it apart. They were still holding fluid behind them.
I am told that a worn 2-4 band could cause this condition. But, thats going beyond my capability to work on.
I am leaning toward a rebuild if its needed to go past the valve body to fix.
Does anyone have any other sugestions?

Re: second gear

Oh, there was some wear on the hole for one of the checkballs in the valve body seperator plate. I smoothed it out good and got the ridges off.
