rear end swap
Looking into a 3 channel to use in place of my 4 channel. I found this info here.

Yes, you can make it work, if you put the axles from your four channel car into the 3 channel rear end and install the sensors into the backing plate.
Can someone elaborate on this? II never touched the rear on this so i don't know exactly what the backing plate is.

what year is the 4 channel car,what year is the 3 channel rearend from ?
Using a 3 channel rearend in a 4 channel vehicle requires swapping the axles,which have the reluctors pressed onto the axle ends, and backing plates,which have the holes in the caliper bracket and dust shield for the reluctor sensors,of the 'old' 4 channel rear in/onto the 'new' 3 channel rear. The 3 channel backing plates do not have holes for the sensors as implied in post #1. The 3 channel reluctor mounted on the carrier can be left as is mounted on the carrier and the 3 channel sensor hole on top of the rearend can be plugged just by leaving the sensor mounted.
The axles and backing plates from the 3 channel rearend can be sold as they're always in short supply as replacements for worn axles and backing plates to use on aftermarket 12 bolt rearends.
backing plates consist of dust shield,e-brake parts,and caliper bracket. once axles are out,4 bolts hold the backing plates to the rearend housing.

While there is no "signature", I believe Chet has a 95, which will not have the 98-02 shoe style e-brake components shown in the photo. The 93-97 design uses a cable operated lever on the caliper as the e-brake. But as you point out, the year of each axle assembly makes a difference, since he will have to decide what to do with the brakes if they don't match.

95 and later was when 4channel was available.
I wasn't implying that those would be the ones,just that to show 4 bolts hold them on.
Also a swap could involve a rear gear ratio change. M6 had 3.42. A4s' had either 2.73 or 3.23.

You brakes, including the lines on the axles and dual brake line connection - 3 channel only has a single rear brake line from the ABS unit, teeing off on top of the diff housing. 4 channel has two brake lines from the ABS unit to the rear. You don't even have to open up the brake system if you do it that way.
