LT-1/LS-1 rear axle swaps

any answers on whether or not an LS-1 rear end and LT-1 rear ends are externally the same and will they interchange. I am wondering because I may try to beef up a 10 bolt to hold up, I know that there are better quality parts than stock that can be used to make it stronger and then I won't have to change everything relating to the axle mounting to put in a 12 bolt. And any opinions or experiences with doing this yourself?

It is possible to swap complete rear ends, but you cannot mix axles and brakes between the two. Depending whether the LT1 car has ASR or not, there can be issues with that and ABS.

Yeah I found out first hand that the LS1 axles are a little shorter than the LT1 axles.

Re: LT-1/LS-1 rear axle swaps

OK, so what I have is that EXTERNALLY an LT-1 and an LS-1 axle are the same as far as mounting points go.....but the axles are shorter internally? so what I can use is a complete axle assembly but are the internals different? Is the axle diameter bigger/larger spline count, how about bearing size? A better posi unit is a given for either for what I am running. Also planned would be a cast rear end cover with support bolts. Of course I will use the LS-1 brakes or an aftermarket upgrade. What kind of issues can there be with the ABS?

Re: LT-1/LS-1 rear axle swaps

I have a 98 rear in my 94 Z28. If you use the ls1 brakes and emergency brake cables it is a direct swap. If you have abs only you will need an abs only rear to keep your abs. If you have traction control you will need a traction control rear. I think the spline count is the same and the difference in axle length is because of the diffrent brakes.
