I have no overdrive in my 94 cam

So Im new here, due to the recent purchase of a 94 camaro. I love the car, but, Im still trying to iron out some, what I thought to be small, problems. The car is in great shape cosmetically, interior is still mint, body is good, and I have done alot of preventative maintanance on it so far. However, On my way home today, I had the shifter in overdrive, but it never got out of 3rd gear. Shifting through the gears ( 1st to 2nd) it would tach pretty high. 1st gear would tach out around 4000rpm before it shifted into 2nd, and I wasnt on the throttle that hard for that to happen. It shifts into 3rd pretty normally.
I know this tranny has a lock out torque converter system, but can anyone tell me why I have absolutely no overdrive?

What condition is the fluid in? Is it dark or smell burnt? Are you certain it's not making a 1-3 shift? 2 things have to be applied for O/D. the 2-4 band and the 3-4 clutches. Your 1-2 shift issue makes me believe you're experiencing band failure. If it were missing both 3rd and 4th, I'd say the 3-4 clutches. If the trans has any amount of miles on it, I'd say there's a good chance that both are bad.

147k miles on it. The only fluid that is not new is the trans. Im going to do a filter and fluid change this weekend. If the issue your talking about w the bands and clutch packs are the case, that pretty much means the trans needs to be rebuilt?

Yes, it's probably time for a rebuild. If the fluid smells burnt, a fluid change is going to be a waste of time and money, however if you drop the pan and you see black sediment in the bottom of it, you might as well just start pulling it out.

Lucas will do more harm than good. It won't put the material back on the band that is laying in your pan. It will however, turn the seals into a jelly type substance. It usually tears up alot of internal parts beyond reuse also. When we do a trans that has had Lucas in it, it usually ends up costing the customer quite a bit more money.

well that blows. So the Lucas stuff is junk huh? I refilled the trans w new fluid, It did help, however, I still have no overdrive but no more clutch slippage. Maybe this will buy me some time though, until I got the loot to spring for a new trans.
