Gears

my rear blew out a while back while I was going around a turn. Everything in the differential was destroyed. I bought a torsen unit and had it installed. No issues with it. It has 2.73 gears.

How do I change the gears on it? I would like some 3.73

Re: Gears

If it left the factory with 2.73 gears, it should be a 2-series carrier. You need a set of 3.73's made specifically for a 2-series carrier. Yes - GM 7.5/7.625 10-bolt gears.

To do the complete job, you need the ring & pinion set, an install kit (crush sleeve or Ratech solid spacer, seals, bearings, shims, etc), 2 quarts of 75W-90 synthetic gear lube. I don't know if they recommend the GM limited slip additive for the Torsen.

To install, you need to know what you are doing. You need a dial indicator, a pinion depth checker, inch-pound torque wrench, and marking compound. Bearings may need to be pressed.

You will need to find a good "how to" online. Make the smallest mistake and you can have a howling rearend that will drive you crazy. I've been working on my own cars for (let's say ) "many" decades and I have never attempted a gear swap. I have a pro who knows how to achieve faultless results.

Re: Gears

^^^ covered about all of it. Don't forget about checking/evaluating the axle bearings and seals.
